The NMP2 is a shareware version of the same product that Network
Products Corporation (NPC) has been selling commercially for several
years. It is complete, and not crippled in any way. Its only limitation
relative to the registered, or standard commercial version, is that only
one copy can be run on a single network. With the standard version multiple
NMP2s can be run on a single network, allowing the user to create a virtual
modem pool.
The NMP2 is a modem sharing program that runs in the background on a
DOS based workstation. It allows a comm port or internal modem on that
workstation to be shared by other users on the network. The NMP2 requires
under 30k of RAM in the server.
A workstation accesses the NMP2 through the Network Communication
Services Interface (NCSI). NCSI is loaded in the workstation prior to
loading the application that will communicate through the shared modem.
NCSI can be loaded with various command line switches. It uses from 9K to
36K or RAM, depending on the configuration, and can be unloaded when not in
use. DOS applications that work with the NMP2 must support the NCSI
interface. A file is included listing most of the applications available
that are known to be NCSI compliant.
Windows applications that support the NCSI interface will also work with
the NMP2. In addition, a COMM.DRV replacement is included in the file that
will allow non-NCSI compliant applications to use the NMP2. The NMP@ and
COMM.DRV replacement have been tested with many applications, including the
Terminal applet, WinCim, and several fax applications. Fax applications
must be set up for Class II support in order to work.
The NMP2.EXE file is a self extracting archive. After execution it will
need to be further extracted to two high density floppy disks prior to
installation. It includes versions that support NetWare 2.x, 3.x and 4.x,
NetWare Lite, Vines 4.x and 5.x. It also includes two NetBIOS versions.
One version uses NetBIOS datagram services, and works with Lantastic,
Windows for Workgroups and Lan Manager, as well as other NetBIOS compatible
networks. The other version support NetBIOS session level services and
works with Digital's Pathworks.
The registration fee for the NMP2 is $49. Registration is accomplished by
purchasing the standard commercial product, either through a reseller or
directly from NPC.
